CALLING ALL NUTMEG READERS!! The Connecticut Humanities Council presents Book Voyagers, a book discussion program for children on Thursday, November 10th, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. The book to be discussed is one of the 2006 Nutmeg Books - The City of Ember, by Jeanne Duprau. The city of Ember has the only light in a dark world. Beyond the city itself the darkness goes on forever in all directions. When the children who live in the city finish school, they go on to work at 12 years of age. Lina Mayfleet desperately wants to work as a messenger. Messengers spend their days outside, running from one corner of the city to another. Instead, though, she draws the dreaded job of Pipeworks laborer, which means she will be stuck in tunnels deep underground. Doon Harrow is appointed as a messenger and asks to trade with Lina! Doon wants to be underground - that's where the generator is and Doon has ideas about how to fix it. For as long as anyone can remember, the great lights of Ember have kept the endless darkness that surrounds the city at bay. But now the lights are beginning to flicker.... Do you know the rest of the story? Come and share your thoughts with us. If you have not read the book, multiple copies are available at the library for you to check out and read before the program. If you don't have a chance to read the book, come to the discussion anyway. Many of your friends and classmates will be there and you can join in the fun. Refreshments will be served following the program. Remember, there is no school the next day. Come for a "special night out" at the library and sleep in the following morning! The book discussion will be led by Sara deBeer, well-known storyteller, and is geared for children in grades 4 - 6. The program is free and open to the general public. For more information, or to register, please call the Children's Department at 528-6102.
